Vinyl Desk Pads

Prestige Office Accessories features an assortment of vinyl desk pads, each of which offers a high level of protection for your desk or fine furniture, a convenient storage area for notes and papers and a superior writing surface. Affordable, functional, attractive, and highly durable, the vinyl desk pad's soft surface and uniform surface texture provides a superb writing surface, with a comfort level and elegance approaching that of a leather desk pad.

Functions of the Vinyl Desk Pad:
A vinyl desk pad from Prestige Office Accessories performs four main functions:
1.) It provides a smooth, comfortable writing surface. If you are looking for an elegant, yet affordable desk pad that is very comfortable and easy to write on, our vinyl desk pads are an ideal choice. They are quite soft to the touch, yet are designed to absorb the pressure and impact of all writing instruments. A vinyl desk pad accommodates any writing style, and allows your writing to project a smooth, luxurious, and consistent appearance. A protective felt backing cushions the desk from the pad itself, and ensures that the pad remains in place.
2.) It helps to protect the surface it covers from the effects of writing and other daily activities. In addition to providing a luxurious writing surface, our vinyl desk pads serve to protect the desk surface from the forces associated with writing, as well as from the scratches, scrapes, nicks, etc., that can be caused by staples, staplers, paper clips, file folders, and the like.
3.) It serves as a temporary storage area for notes, files, papers, and magazines. In our day-to-day work activity, piles of paperwork, magazines, and the like tend to accumulate. Until these items are disposed of or filed, they typically remain on the desktop or worksurface. Placing them on a vinyl desk pad eliminates the possibility of scratches occurring as these items are pulled across or moved about the desk, and protects against other potential surface damages that may be caused by staples, binder clips, paper clips, as well as by the weight of the piles themselves.
4.) It is aesthetically appealing, thus satisfactorily meeting the design requirements of the modern workplace or home office environment. The vinyl desk pad's textured surface finish serves to complement virtually any decor. While the aesthetics of our desk pads serve to enhance the appearance of the desk or worksurface in the home office, they are equally attractive to designers of commercial office interiors, as they allow them a great deal of design flexibility and project scope.

Origin and Construction of the Vinyl Desk Pad:
Developed in the 1920's by scientist Waldo Semon, who specialized in rubber, vinyl was created by converting hydrocarbon-based raw materials (like crude oil) into unique synthetic products called polymers. Unlike other polymers however, vinyl contains chlorine (which is essentially derived from common table salt) as well as carbon and hydrogen.

The creation of vinyl is a two step process.

In the first step, ethylene and chlorine are combined to form ethylene dichloride which in turn, is transformed into a gas called vinyl chloride monomer. In the final step, referred to as polymerization, this vinyl chloride monomer is converted into vinyl polymer, a fine-grained, white powder or resin, also known as polyvinyl chloride, or simply " vinyl." Once certain chemical additives and modifiers are added, the resulting material, a vinyl compound, can be converted into an almost limitless range of soft or hard vinyl products. Because of this versatility, a broad spectrum of vinyl products have been created over the years, ranging from plastic food storage wraps and bags, to the vinyl used in the fabrication of our vinyl desk pads.

The vinyl desk pad itself is constructed in four layers:

1.) A layer of impregnated paper or jute,
2.) The vinly polymer, as mentioned above,
3.) A coat of varnish, and
4.) The felt backing.

The manufacturing process is as follows: A calendar is first used to roll the vinyl polymer onto the impregnated paper or jute. Once dry, the vinyl is coated with a cross-linked PU/Acrylic varnish, which minimizes the irritating effects of light reflection, and provides the desired anti-glare characteristic. Following that, the vinyl is cut to shape, and carefully wrapped around a steel substrate (or core). In the final step, a felt backing is applied to the bottom of the desk pad.

Applications for the Vinyl Desk Pad:
Vinyl Desk Pads are an affordable alternative to Leather Desk Pads, combining aesthetic appeal with a high degree of functionality. Long a favorite of interior decorators, commercial and residential office designers and facility managers, vinyl desk pads satisfy the need for a cost-effective versatile, functional alternative to leather; one that combines the elements of inherent quality and beauty with affordability and functionality. Vinyl desk pads can be used in virtually any office or industrial environment - they are as well-suited for use on desks or worksurfaces in the home office, or on desks situated on the shop floor of a manufacturing facility as they are in banks, retail outlets, or the workstations or executive suites and conference rooms of government officials or Fortune 500 companies.
Their tactile qualities of warmth and softness, combined with their even, consistent surface grain, imbue them with much of the desired ergonomics needed to serve, for many individuals, as an excellent replacement for the mouse pad. Our Vinyl Desk Pads are currently being used in, among other places, home or residential offices, banks, investment firms, hospitals, hotels, casinos, libraries, law firms, schools, colleges and universities, industrial facilities, retail concerns, commercial offices, corporate headquarters, small businesses, U.S. and foreign embassies, and in U.S. Government and Military offices and facilities worldwide.

So, Why Select a Vinyl Desk Pad?
Vinyl is long lasting, and offers considerable flexibility in terms of design possibilities. Coated with a glare-free matte surface finish, the vinyl desk pad exudes an elegant, luxurious appearance. In addition to its surface grain, which causes it to closely resemble leather in appearance, vinyl's tactile qualities give it a smooth, warm, slightly springy surface, that make it a pleasure to touch, resulting in a very comfortable, yet resilient and functional writing surface. Vinyl Desk Pads are easy to care for and will stand up well to the rigors of everyday use. They are truly an affordable, aesthetic, and functional alternative to leather, ideally suited for use in any home or commercial office environment.

In Summary, the Advantages of Vinyl Desk Pads are:
  • An Affordable Alternative to Leather
  • Aesthetic Appeal - Glare-Free Matte Surface Finish
  • Durability
  • Ease of Care
  • A Natural But Luxurious Appearance
  • Ergonomic Qualities - Smooth, Grained Finish, which is Warm and Slightly Springy
  • Design Versatility and Scope
